This shower screen is a fine piece of metal work, surely laser cut. Such pieces always amaze me because I don't feel the holes at all, but I see them, and they are there. The surfaces feel absolutely smooth, yet there are many little holes in it, under 0.2mm in diameter. It's stiff and will stand up to normal careful handling. The edges don't cut into the fingers. I didn't try very hard to bend it because I didn't want to succeed, but it seems as strong as one could expect.Being 58.5mm, it fits fine in the basket on top of the puck, but it would not fit on the bottom of the basket because of the slight narrowing of the basket toward the bottom.Using it, the result is that the extraction looked the same as usual, lots of crema at the end as usual for this bean. The shower screen is usually filthy and with this, it was very clean, so the puck screen did its job. It's very easy to rinse off the puck screen, saving the chore of cleaning the shower screen after the shot. After removing the portafilter after the shot, I've heard of using a magnet to remove such a puck screen from the used puck, but just pressing down one side of it I was able to lift the other side to get a finger on the edge and take it out.Since this goes on the top of the puck, I would not expect any reduction in oil (mouth feel) in the shot from using this. It works fine.

In my opinion, a puck screen is a must when you are preparing espresso. It helps take up space in your basket in case you underdose, and it may spread the water evenly across your puck, helping with a more even extraction. But even if you don't subscribe to those ideas, a puck screen definitely keeps your shower screen much cleaner than without one. This is MHW's take on the puck screen, and it's a simple affair fitting 58mm portafilters. This one is 0.2mm thick, which is very thin if you are not familiar with it. Another common size is 1.7mm, which is noticeably thicker. There's no issue or problem with a screen this thin, except it does not reduce your headroom that much (if you're looking for that), and it's much much more fragile (easy to bend if you're not careful). The hole spacing seems very even and consistent. There are apparently over 10,000 of them! Overall, it is highly recommended.

This is the thinnest espresso puck screen in my collection of tools, and it is my favorite and most used! It has a sleek matt black finish, and works as intended – keeps the brew head clean and is very good at maintaining an even water flow. I love that it’s thin – I don’t need to adjust the amount of coffee reducing to accommodate a thicker screen in the portafilter basket. Definitely recommend!
